Quality over QuantityInvestment Technique
Trying to track a lot of firms is difficult. The more firms that you have in a portfolio, the larger the amount of work you must do to track them. The chance increases that sub-par firms will be included in your portfolio.
It’s best to pick, buy, and hold the firms that will be the most likely to perform over the long term. A portfolio of 30 firms is usually difficult for an individual investor to research. It’s simply time-consuming to track news and development relating to all of them. A portfolio of over 50 firms is almost impossible. The chances that capital loss will result from multiple blow ups are increased by allowing more firms into your portfolio than you can track. You should focus on ownership of a few great long term firms: investment isn’t about quantity but about quality. A few great firms at a fair price are better than many mediocre firms at great prices or horrible prices.
